Mortgage Rescue Scheme Nationally Recognised
Hafod Housing Association received national recognition by being shortlisted as a finalist in the ‘Meeting housing needs and aspirations in a changing market' category of the 2009 UK Housing Awards for our work on Mortgage Rescue. The Awards are held on an annual basis by the Chartered Institute of Housing.
Hafod Housing Association pioneered mortgage rescue in 2005 and has looked at 380 mortgage rescue cases and successfully helped over 90 families avoid repossession and homelessness with another 40 on offer.
Our early mortgage rescue work was mainly self-funded with some help from using recycled Social housing Grant. The Welsh Assembly Government was interested in our work and eager to learn what we were doing. Following a briefing from us the Welsh Assembly Government announced their policy to support a streamlined and effective mortgage rescue package for Wales. Working closely with the Assembly we helped shape a successful Welsh mortgage rescue model.
Following the announcement of the Welsh Assembly Government Mortgage Rescue Scheme we were approached by four local authorities to help deliver this service for them:
• Bridgend
• Cardiff
• Merthyr Tydfil
• Rhondda Cynon Taf
These partnerships helped us to expand our own mortgage rescue work to help more families avoid becoming homeless.
