Non Dependent Housing Benefit Deduction Information

The non-dependant deductions for Housing and Council Tax Benefit entitlement are going to increase.  The Governement has not yet confirmed at what rate they will be set or the date that this will happen (but the changes are expected to happen in April 2011).  We have been informed that claimants will be notified by their Local authority.

In order to calculate the non-dependant charge the local authority needs to see the wage slips or benefit entitlment letters of the non-dependant.  If you do not provide these, local authorities are allowed to charge you the maximum non-dependant deduction, which at the moment is £47.75.

The non-dependant deduction is money paid top a non-dependant to you.  If they do not give you a contribution for their keep, the local authority will still apply the non-dependant deduction to your Housing and Council tax Benefit claim.

A non-dependant is someone who normally lives with the Housing Benefit claimant such as an adult son, daughter, realtive or friend.  Non-dependants cannot claim Housing Benefit for any payments they make for their keep.  The non-dependant charge will depend on their gross income.
