Improving Environments

St Mellons Green Roots

Green Routes in St Mellons channelled the energies of young people back into their own community with the aim of enhancing its aesthetic appeal. During the summer of 2004 five artists from Coed Hills Rural Artspace worked with over 50 young people to produce a number of different pieces of art. Not only did young people have an opportunity to exercise their creativity but they also learnt new skills. The end results have been of a very high standard. The carved bench at the start of the reen that looks intriguing from every angle; the cleverly inlaid steel disks in the pavements; the sculpted bricks on the front of the Community Education Centre; the painted railings; and the immense and symbolic way markers along Linear Park.

Carving Community Spirit

This environmental project aimed to engage the community through the production of 2 wooden totem poles, a wooden planter and a carved ‘Welcome to Fir Tree Drive' sign. The carvings were designed and completed by the young people themselves and were located in areas that they identified. The carvings have improved the aesthetic appearance of the estate and made better use of its green spaces. Ultimately the project gave young people a "voice" in their community and increased their confidence, self esteem and sense of belonging.

Rivers Green

In August 2004 Creation Ltd were commissioned to harness the enthusiasm of local young people to work on an environmental project to rejuvenate a grassed play area & overgrown riverbank in Nantyffyllon, Maesteg. ‘Rivers Green' ran for 3 weeks & resulted in the clearing of the riverbank; ecological planting schemes; and the creation of carved and sculpted artwork. The elected theme of river creatures was reflected in the 5 large stone ‘River' statues positioned within the river itself with just their fins showing whilst a metal dolphin sculpture was also located on the riverbank. The group was advised by Maesteg River Care group who helped the participants learn more about this important tributary and their local environment.
