Great-grandmother, Edith Gould, a resident at our Arthur Jenkins Care Home in Blaenavon, celebrated her 101st birthday on Tuesday 25th July surrounded by her family, friends and not one, but two local Mayors!
Our staff organised the get together which included a tasty buffet, entertainment by singer Jack Woods, dancing, singing and cook Helen baked Edith a special cake.
Guests included Edith’s son, daughter and grandchildren, Cllr Jessica Powell, Mayor of Torfaen, Cllr Phyllis Roberts, Mayor of Blaenavon and Lynn Tanner, MBE, from Torfaen’s Care Home ‘Ask and Talk’ Volunteer Service.
Born in Talywain, Edith grew up in the area and worked locally as a cleaner at British Nylon Spinners in Pontypool.
She married Thomas Elijah in 1934 and they had four children, two daughters and two sons. Edith and Thomas enjoyed 63 years of marriage before Thomas sadly passed away in 1997. Edith lived with her son for some time before moving to Arthur Jenkins in 2010.
Edith enjoys watching horse racing on TV, athletics & news and social events with a glass of whiskey and visits from her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Commenting on Arthur Jenkins Edith said: “I have always been happy here and nothing is too much trouble for the staff.”
When asked her secret for reaching 101 Edith said: “I would like to know! I think it’s from all the hard work I have done for most of my life.” Edith commented that if she had her time over she would do exactly the same again.
Jane Saunders has been the manager at Arthur Jenkins for over 14 years. She commented. “We were delighted to be able to celebrate Edith’s special birthday and it’s lovely that so many of her family and friends enjoyed the party. We pride ourselves on providing the best levels of care and encouraging our residents to remain active members of our local community. There’s always lots going on and we have a very happy home.”
