August 2018 was a great month for food safety at Hafod with our Ty Cwm Extra Care Scheme, in Merthyr Tydfil, and Plas y Garn Care Home, in Pontypool, achieving our latest 5 out of 5 food hygiene ratings.
This now means that all 16 Hafod schemes that prepare food have a 5 out of 5 rating! A result that fast food or restaurant chains would be proud of!
Our skilled catering team prepare approximately 800,000 meals per year for our residents, tenants, colleagues and visitors. It’s a vocation with a lot of responsibility, with food safety of utmost importance in care settings where we are often caring for older and vulnerable people who are more susceptible to food poisoning.
Our achievement is no mean feat, with the 16 ratings being given by different inspectors across seven local authority areas.
The ratings are a snapshot of the standards of food hygiene found at the time of inspection. This includes:
- handling of food
- how food is stored
- how food is prepared
- cleanliness of facilities
- how food safety is managed
The result is a testament to our hard working and passionate catering and serving staff and our other colleagues who support them in management, maintenance, training, procurement and audit. We would also like to thank the local authority environmental health teams who have provided guidance and advice at our establishments.
