Event recognises local talent and community engagement

Over 60 members of the local community attended our ‘Inspire Butetown’ event in Cardiff this week to recognise and celebrate the achievements of local young people and those who champion community engagement.

Members of the community were invited to nominate people for an award and 30 young people were recognised for outstanding academic achievements at GCSE, A Level, undergraduate and post graduate levels. Awards were also presented to five people for their dedication and commitment to community engagement.

Inspirational speeches were delivered by Hilary Brown, a lawyer specialising in immigration, Cllr Saeed Ebrahim, ward member for Butetown, Cllr Lynda Thorne Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Paul Cubitt who works for Vaughan Gething, AM and Jas Bains, Chief Executive of Hafod. All encouraged young people in the community to seize every opportunity to achieve their goals.

Jas Bains said:

“We were really keen to host this event to celebrate and recognise the tremendous talent and community spirit within Butetown and inspire the community to achieve their goals. It also signalled the start of a great partnership which will see us supporting the creation of a youth forum to empower young people and hear what matters to them and an open day to promote training and employment opportunities at Hafod.”

Cllr Saeed Ebrahim added: “I’d like to thank Hafod for organising this fantastic event which really showcased the achievements of the young people in Butetown. It also gave us an opportunity to raise aspirations and explain what can be achieved by hard work and making the most of opportunities.”
