Before the storm
- Secure loose objects such as ladders, garden furniture, wheelie bins or anything else that could be blown into and break windows and other glazing
- Close and securely fasten all doors and windows
- Park vehicles in a garage, if available; otherwise keep them clear of buildings, trees, walls and fences
- Close and secure loft hatches/trapdoors if possible
- Make sure you are prepared should there be a power cut; place torches where you know they are and check the batteries are working
During the storm
- Stay indoors as much as possible
- If you do go out, try not to walk or shelter close to buildings and trees
- Keep away from the sheltered side of boundary walls and fences – if these structures fail, they will collapse on this side
- Do not go outside to repair damage while the storm is in progress
- If possible, enter and leave your house through doors in the sheltered side, closing them behind you
- Open internal doors only as needed and close them behind you
- Do not drive unless your journey is really necessary
- If you must drive, take care when driving on exposed routes such as bridges, or high open roads (find alternative routes if possible) and be aware of side winds
After the storm
- Be careful not to touch any electrical or telephone cables that have been blown down or are hanging loose
- If possible, do not walk too close to walls, buildings and trees as they could have been weakened
- If you’ve lost power at night, use torches rather than candles for light to avoid a fire hazard
- If you have identified the need for emergency repairs, please do not try and fix these yourself, instead contact us on 0800 024 8968
