The first residents have now moved into their new homes on Sanitorium Road in Cardiff, marking a significant milestone in one of the city’s largest affordable housing urban regeneration projects.

The scheme, which will provide affordable, low-carbon homes, is a collaboration between Hafod, Lovell Partnerships, Cardiff Council, and the Welsh Government.
When complete, the Lansdowne Road project will see 106 high-quality homes, including a mixture of family houses and flats, designed to meet the needs of local people and contributing to the city’s vibrant community.
Construction began in August 2023, and with the first 66 homes now officially handed over, the full development is on track for completion early in the new year.
Joanne was one of the first residents to move in, of her new home she shared;
“I am so thrilled… the property is beautiful, I feel so lucky to the point it’s overwhelming!”
Designed with a focus on sustainability and energy efficiency, all homes are being built to an EPC A standard, following “fabric first” principles. The use of air source heat pump technology will help reduce energy costs for residents while minimising the environmental impact. The development also incorporates sustainable urban drainage systems and thoughtful landscaping to enhance biodiversity and create a greener, healthier environment.
This transformative development has been made possible through £16.5 million in funding through the Welsh Government’s Social Housing Grant, with an additional £15million invested by Hafod, further reinforcing the project’s long-term commitment to affordability and sustainability.
Ali Salter, Director of Development at Hafod, said:
“At Hafod, we’re committed to investing for a better future by delivering high-quality homes and creating stronger, greener communities. Built on a regenerated brownfield site, the former Lansdowne Hospital, these homes offer excellent access to local amenities and community facilities.
“This development marks a major milestone in our journey, and we’re proud to see the first residents now moving into their new homes at Lansdowne. It’s a moment that brings to life our mission to tackle the housing crisis in Wales with affordable, low-carbon homes that support sustainable living.”
James Duffett, Regional Managing Director at Lovell, said:
“We take great pride in delivering high-quality homes and developments with an emphasis on placemaking at Lovell, transforming derelict sites into thriving communities. Having brought this same ethos to the Lansdowne Road project, we are delighted to see the first residents settle in.
“Our team on-site is working hard to deliver the remainder of the homes to the highest standard, and we look forward to seeing the community continue to grow.”
