In the lead-up to our special cost of living edition of Connect, we asked customers to share their top tips for making their money go further.

Here’s what they told us:

Food and cooking

  • Use an air fryer where possible as it can use significantly less electricity than a conventional oven.
  • Plan meals before shopping and stick to a shopping list to avoid unnecessary purchases.
  • Shop around rather than relying on one supermarket.
  • Use apps such as Olio, Too Good To Go and Supercook to reduce food waste and find affordable meal ideas.
  • Make homemade yoghurt using a slow cooker for a low-cost alternative to shop-bought products.
  • Save seeds from fruit and vegetables and grow your own produce at home.

Energy saving

  • Switch off appliances at the plug when not in use.
  • Reduce thermostat settings slightly to lower heating costs.
  • Only heat your home when occupied.
  • Make use of supplier incentives such as off-peak energy schemes and free energy-saving sessions.
  • Contact energy providers regularly to ask about better tariffs and support options.

 Keeping cool during summer

  • Keep curtains and blinds closed during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Create airflow through the property by opening doors and windows strategically.
  • Run fans during cooler evening periods rather than throughout the day.

 Household money saving

  • Use bank savings features that automatically move small amounts into savings accounts.
  • Sign-up to retailer emails and loyalty schemes to access discounts, welcome offers and birthday rewards.
  • Check regularly that you are receiving all benefits and financial support you may be entitled to.

 Community wellbeing

  • Look out for neighbours and encourage social connections.
  • Offer a cup of tea and conversation to others who may be feeling isolated.
  • Consider community food-growing initiatives in shared spaces.
