Tenants and community volunteers from across our communities came together at Fir Tree Centre in Merthyr Tydfil for a special event celebrating the incredible contribution volunteers make to their local communities.
The event was created to recognise and thank our tenants who generously give their time to help others, improve neighbourhoods and build stronger, more connected communities.
The idea came from our Board member Moawia, who, after hearing about the many ways tenants support their communities, suggest we hold a celebration to thank them. The result was a day dedicated to celebrating those community champions and the positive impact they have across Hafod’s communities.
Guests were welcomed to a beautifully decorated venue, prepared by Community Coach Sinead Vastaloo, with the help of local volunteers who arrived early to make sandwiches and refreshments for everyone attending.
Opening the event, Michelle McGregor, Community Engagement Manager, thanked tenants and volunteers for their commitment and the difference they make every day. Throughout the morning, attendees shared inspiring stories of community spirit, volunteering and friendship.
Among those speaking was Gwyneth, who had lived at Fir Tree Drive for 44 years and continues to support her community through regular volunteering. Tenant Sean spoke about his involvement with the community allotment and Hafod’s Scrutiny Panel, while Alice, a resident at Ty Heulog, shared how being part of her community has positively changed her life.
Tenants from across Hafod’s communities highlighted the many ways people are supporting one another, from creating welcoming social spaces and resident-led activities to helping keep neighbourhoods clean and vibrant.
Another contribution came from Norman, a resident who volunteers alongside his wife, Siteri, at our extra care scheme Golau Caredig in Barry, organising singalongs and community discos that bring people together.
Guests spoke warmly about the day and the opportunity to meet others making a difference in their communities.

Reflecting on the event, Michelle McGregor, Community Engagement Manager, said:

Everyone’s circumstances may be different, but we all share a desire to improve our communities and help others. It was amazing to see so much enthusiasm in the room and such strong support for one another.”
