Hamilton House, Barry

Six new one-bed apartments have been completed in Barry by housing provider Hafod, in partnership with the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Kingfisher Developments.

The project, which transformed a former office building into high-quality homes for social rent, responds directly to the high demand for one-bedroom apartments in the Vale.

The town-centre location has great access to local shops and other essential amenities, with the newly converted apartments providing comfortable, high-quality, and energy efficient homes.

Hamilton House features solar panels and an all-electric heating system, eliminating the need for gas and helping to reduce carbon emissions, while also minimising energy costs.

The £1.3m redevelopment was funded by Welsh Government’s Social Housing Grant through the Vale of Glamorgan Council, with additional investment by Hafod.

Chris Monk, Project Manager at Hafod, said:

“Everyone deserves a safe, healthy and affordable place to call home, where their health and wellbeing is supported.

“By repurposing these former offices, we’ve been able to breathe new life into an unused building.

“Barry has the greatest housing need in the Vale of Glamorgan, and with Hafod already providing over 700 homes in the area, the redevelopment of Hamilton House reflects our long-term commitment to investing for a better future and delivering the homes people need.”

Cllr Sandra Perkes, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Public Sector Housing and Tenant Engagement, said:

“The Council is proud to have worked with Hafod on this project which will provide much-needed one-bedroom accommodation in Barry.

“Located in a convenient town centre setting, this scheme is part of a long-term plan to increase the number of properties available to people on local waiting lists.

“The Council itself has completed a series of housing developments in recent years, with others on the way, and partnered with Registered Social Housing providers to deliver further homes.

“Hamilton House will provide tenants with comfortable, modern accommodation close to local shops and amenities and within an existing community.

“It has been built to exacting standards, with energy efficiency and the environment a key consideration in line with the Council’s Project Zero commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030.”

Simon Cottingham, Managing Director at Kingfisher Developments (Wales) Ltd shared:

“As a Vale of Glamorgan contractor for over 30 years we are delighted to deliver much needed energy efficient social housing for Vale residents, working closely with our long-standing clients Hafod. We hope the new residents will be happy in their new homes.”
